Well anger... I can feel
And somatic releases
Its funny, or not so funny how anger seems to be the feeling that over-thinkers find eassiest to feel, it seems to bypass the thinking net (that all the others get trapped in) and makes its ugly head pretty distinguishable- so much so it can even take lime-light from the thoughts- so that we finally get a break from the noise of our minds.
If i’m completely honest,
I find comfort in my anger sometimes.
The trouble is, anger, especially with the added fuel of freedom from thought, has the tendency to cause volatile behaviour, often that on reflection seems irrational or aggressive…
Well that’s why we like it right? Cause we don’t have to think about it! But thats why it’s most dangerous too.
So what I propose
Is a Lil trick that helps me get my fix but with less repercussions- is we bring up the anger in a more managed way… I know, sounds less fun but i promise its actually quite thrilling.
I do this using the other kind of somatic practice to what I described in last week’s post.
These are energetic releases and as the name suggests, they are made to expel energy from us in the form of feelings, that otherwise would be pent up inside of us, causing discomfort and even physical health problems. I am sure you have heard it before that being angry is bad for your heart and blood pressure! But what is also bad for your blood pressure, is the anxiety that comes from acting in a way you didn’t mean, in an uncontrollable fit of rage.
It’s important to distinguish that we are not controlling feelings, banishing or denying them just makes things worse. We are managing them, giving them attention in our own time and showing them the door once they have had their moment.
Sooooo, the fun stuff… let’s start with my FAV:
PILLOW POWER: get a pillow and stuff your face in it, shout, scream, bite. I even like to punch and throw it onto the bed. It’s the most incredibly powerful tool once you get into it. Lots of people are apprehencive at first and take time to let themselves go.. i on the other-hand got stuck in straight away. Regardless of how long it takes you, once you get there, you too will love it. Best to warn those you live with first though. make it more confusing for yourself, just give it a go.
BREAK THE WALL- Stand in front of a wall a bit closer than arms length away and then press your palms s into the wall with all your might, literally untiltil you are shaking!!
SQUEEZE SQUEEZE SQUEEZE - you can do this one wherever! I have used it before in the loo at a restaurant when my sister was Driving me mad. You tense your body, every muscle with everything you got, once again, I like to shake from the effort. Then you release, it’s as simple as that and it’s magical!
None of these are complex and they are all super useful. Really, to a non-over-thinker, they might actually come naturally. Some people I know use techniques like this without thought. For us, things tend to be more thought out… but the good news is they work if you give them a real go.
Let me know how you get on, I’d love to hear some funny angry stories too, if I get enough, I might share one of mine!
