What good does my Over-thinker bring me?

We have done a lot of chatting about the struggle, the discomfort and the trouble that our saboteurs bring us. I want to look at the silver lining today

Let’s get this straight - your over-thinker itself, brings you NOTHING, HOWEVER…

There are many traights that you are likely to have if you have a loud over-thinker that probably add to your personality more than you know.

We are going to look through these today because:

A) it can be empowering to notice them present in yourself

B) we can encourage these sides of ourselves. If we direct some of the energy that the Over-thinker is stealing, into more useful and exciting avenues and make the most of the opportunities they provide us.

These include:

Being creative- Think of all of the crazy ‘what if’ stories that your brain has fabricated. All the details you have created in your mind to explain why and what they are thinking about you. This creativity poses a a whole host of possibility for you. What we want to do together is acknowledge it and redirect it towards cool new projects and exciting creations.

(Have a look at the book “The artist’s way” by Julia Cameron, even if you have never considered yourself an artist or can’t even colour between the lines, like me! It has been such a useful tool for me to focus my creative energy into helping me grow, rather than feeding my over-thinker.)

Being thoughtful/considerate/empathetic-

Because we are always thinking and evaluating how and why we are feeling a certain way, we have an incredible ability to be empathetic and understanding towards others.

A LIL TIP: this one comes from my mum, and often annoyed me in the moment she’d suggest it but it works a treat! When you are stuck in your head in thoughts about yourself, one of the most effective ways to make yourself feel better is by doing something for someone else. Seeing as we are likely to be really good at understanding what others might want and need, make the most of it!

Being inquisitive- Always asking the why behind the what? Not happy until you fully understand? Yes me too. And when that is focused on my own thoughts, it is exhausting because the truth is, it is never as simple as we hope to make it. Instead, you have this awesome trait that makes you great company, especially at a dinner party or in a group project. See where you can turn your detective skills, get learning some cool new stuff and take some fuel away from the fire of your saboteur.

A LIL CHALLENGE: spend an hour researching a topic totally random, one that has no relevance to anything you already do or know about. Use chatGPT to delve into as many avenues as you can.

Being knowledgeable- This is a pretty obvious follow on from the last, seeing as you are so inquisitive, likely you have a lot of space and brain power to soak up lots of interesting stuff. Another attribute of yours that makes this apparent is the fact that you are so hyper-vigilant, you have a lot of fears stored in your mind that are informing you to be on high alert all the time, thinking about all the good and bad things that are or may be happening. If you have room for all of these, think about all the brain space you would have spare if you were to clear some of these shit fears the over-thinker is latching onto.
